Great Atmosphere in Hveragerði as Winners Cross the Finish Line in the Longest Distances
A fantastic atmosphere filled Hveragerði today as more than 1,000 runners took part in Hengill Ultra 2026, one of Iceland’s premier trail running events. Athletes from 38 countries traveled to Iceland to compete across five distances through the rugged and spectacular landscapes surrounding the Hengill volcanic area.
The first major winners of the day have now crossed the finish line after battling challenging conditions on the course.
In the 106 km race, Tómas Aron Viggósson claimed victory in the men’s division, finishing in an impressive 14:34:14 despite demanding trail conditions. In the women’s race, Mafalda Sigmarsson of Portugal took the win in 18:59:13. Mafalda, who has lived in Iceland for the past six years, delivered a strong and composed performance throughout the race.
In the 53 km race, Grétar Guðmundsson secured victory in the men’s category, while Dalrós Inga Ingadóttir won the women’s race in 5:51:00 after an outstanding run. Dalrós won the 106km at Hengill Ultra in 2023 at only 19 years of age.
The 26 km race was won by Egill Gunnarsson of Fjallahlaupaþjálfun, who crossed the finish line first among the men in 1:47:24. In the women’s division, Hildur Aðalsteinsdóttir of Haukar claimed victory in 1:59:56, becoming the first woman to reach the finish line in that distance.
Although heavy rain in the days leading up to the event left parts of the course wet and demanding, the race has run smoothly throughout the day. Conditions improved steadily as the day progressed, and large crowds gathered in Hveragerði to cheer runners across the finish line and enjoy the vibrant festival atmosphere surrounding the event.
Now in its 15th year, Hengill Ultra has established itself as one of Iceland’s leading trail running events. This year marks a record level of international participation, with runners from 38 countries taking part across the event’s five distances.
