A fantastic way to dip your toes into trail running and challenge yourself on this lovely trail around Hveragerði
The 10K trail blast starts in Breiðumörk, the main street in Hveragerði, right outside the town hall. From the gun, runners charge past the local skyr factory, cruise through the botanical garden, and climb into the narrow river gorge, following the Varmá river. You’ll pass the Frosti og Funa guesthouse and grind up a short climb, cross the road, and aim straight for the Hamars ridge.
Next up: smooth forest singletrack skirts the southern flank of Hamarinn, then you scramble up to the edge of an old lava field. From there, it’s out onto the historic Kambavegur trail, just beneath the summer cabins at Hrauntunga.
The course follows this old track to a bridle path that heads north, running roughly parallel to the main highway, over the top of Hamarinn. Then it’s a descent into the valley, making your way toward the Hamarshöll area, eventually linking into a trail that leads down to a parking lot near Varmá river and Dalakaffi, tucked in at the back of the valley.
Here’s where the fun really kicks in: you’ll cross a footbridge and then follow the river trail heading back toward Hveragerði. As the course approaches the local equestrian grounds, get ready—runners will ford the Varmá river on foot. Yep, you’re getting wet. Everyone does.
After the river crossing, the trail picks up again past the old Hamarshöll site, hugging the slope as it drops back into town. You’ll pass Frosti og Funa once more, cruise the riverside path, wind back through the botanical garden, and hit Breiðumörk for that final push to the finish line.
Expect varied terrain, river crossings, forest flow, and a whole lot of Icelandic trail magic packed into just 10K.
